MBM Contracting – Project Spotlight

You can find BLEND Bar with Davidoff Cigars on the first floor of the Koppers building in downtown Pittsburgh. BLEND is a very unique cigar bar and cocktail lounge offering premium cigars, bourbons, wines, french press coffees, and more. This upscale establishment has many historical features like the marble around the bar from the RB Mellon Mansion and the preserved steel beam with original markings used to construct the building 87 years ago. MBM completed the demolition and build-out of 5,000 SF of space which included a walk-in humidor, kitchen, large bar with marble columns, lounge area with ample seating, restrooms, and a boardroom for private events or meetings.

Property & Casualty Insurance Company

This local property and casualty insurance company brought MBM on board to complete the interior renovation of their existing facility in Downtown Pittsburgh. The renovations incorporated a total demolition and fit-out of approximately 17,000 SF, completed in two phases. The new space includes multiple offices and conference rooms, open office areas, a training room, multiple breakrooms, and a hospitality area. All efforts throughout construction were focused on sustaining a positive staff experience, maintaining full access to the facility, and ensuring no interruption to operations.

AIA Design Pittsburgh Awards Ceremony

On October 27th IKM Inc. was awarded the Certificate of Merit in Architecture for the Forbes Regional Hospital Elevator Tower and Emergency Department Addition. The jury commented that “The elevator tower and addition deftly connect and transform the hospital complex in a manner, which is both beautiful and highly functional. The new addition creates a dialogue, and the resultant conversation allows one to see the former building in a new way. The color, materiality, and transparency of the new anodized aluminum panels complement and elevate the existing brick buildings, bringing the existing hospital forward with new relevance.” Congratulations to IKM Inc. on the award-winning design. We are honored to have been the Construction Manager on this important project..

Team MBM Spotlight

Richard Devine

Project Manager & Estimator
MBM Contracting, Inc.

Rich has been with MBM since 1990. Over the years he’s worked on many construction projects for our corporate, healthcare, higher education, and retail clients. His favorite part of his job is meeting and working with all of the subcontractors, architects, and owners involved in each project. Outside of the office he enjoys golfing, riding his motorcycle, and playing with his grandkids. His favorite vacation spots are Italy and Aruba, but he’d also love to travel from coast to coast on his Harley.

What do you like about working at MBM?

I have been here for 26 years and hopefully helped the company grow to what it is today.

Which projects are you most proud of?

Too many over the years to count but I enjoyed the international conference/learning centers at CMU, the theater in the round, and the dinosaur at Carnegie Museum but most recently the Blend Bar in Pittsburgh with it’s historical story.

Tell us three things most people don’t know about you…

I delivered my daughter when she was born in my house, I am a journeyman bricklayer as well as a carpenter, and I have raced a Lamborghini.

Tell us a little bit about BLEND Bar.

During the day, it’s the perfect meeting place to close an important business deal. At night, it’s a trendy and sophisticated nightspot where you can entertain old friends while making new ones. BLEND has combined sophisticated class with trendy technology to create an upscale environment where men and women with discriminating taste can enjoy the finest selection of premium cigars along with an exceptional selection of fine wines and spirits. With its state-of-the-art ventilation system, BLEND is the ideal destination for couples to enjoy a luxurious experience.

What was your experience like working with MBM?

MBM Contracting was truly a collaborator on the project vs. just being a General Contractor. They were able to appreciate the vision for BLEND Pittsburgh and all of the architectural design elements that were used and that dated back to 1900. Many of these elements required restoration and had to be installed with tender loving care. We received numerous compliments from the property owner regarding how professional and polite all of the subcontractors were on the project, which is a reflection of MBM Contracting. We were under tight time constraints and MBM delivered. We really feel that MBM Contracting is part of the BLEND family and are personal friends.

What do you like most about the BLEND bar renovations?

The before and after! The 5,000 square feet was very tired, cut up, and much of it was unused. To look at the “after” photos is quite remarkable. It could not have been done without the significant support by the property owner, Rugby Realty. The Koppers Building is a magnificent part of the Pittsburgh history and culture, and our goal was to make BLEND complimentary to that magnificence.
